Gameplay and UI
Welcome back to another devlog. We've been kinda silent for a few weeks, but we've recently been making progress on the game. Last time I wrote about The Wandering, I'm not even sure that was the game's name, but anyways, we have more material from the game we can already share. If you've been following the game's page, it's been updated with a temporary logo (it's already been modified but it's still practically the same) and there's been other changes to it in general.
As we're approaching the final phases of development according to our college's schedule, we've been hurrying up many visual elements. Design-wise, it's staying practically the same. The script isn't done as of yet, but soon it's going go through another big update. As of now, I can finall show gameplay! If you're reading this, just take into account the visuals aren't final and some things may still change about the game. Anyways, here's how the game works:
The Wandering is a videogame about navigating a labyrinth where different characters offer different perspectives about life. You can talk to them and get to know them as well why they think the way they do.
However, The Wandering doesn't really stop there. The main mechanic of the game consists in writing down whatever dialogue the player wants, which is done right in the middle of a conversation.
Any dialogue the player writes down is accesible through a diary, which is accesible when the player finds a bench and sits down to reflect about the journey so far.
In this diary, the player will find a question about what's happening in this place. In this case we see "Where am I?" which the player can then answer however they feel like.
The player then can go around, talking to the characters, getting to know them, having more points of view towards life, and when they feel it's time to move on, they can return to the tower where they woke up and continue the journey into another phase.
The gameplay loop of The Wandering had already been explained in the first post of this devlog, however, sharing gameplay gifs can be much more enriching and can explain it far better than simple words. Also, it's an amazing opportunity to show the UI work that has gone into the game in the past two weeks or so.
Right now I'll be working on getting some SFX into the game and as of later this week, we'll be testing the game with a close group of people. At a later date we may be testing further with a more open batch of people, so if you're interested in that, leave a comment and we may take you into account.
Thank you for reading so far! The Wandering should (because that's our colllege deadline) be ready around september 2021.
